Burrrr! Winter Has Arrived in Virginia!

It's 27 degrees out this morning. 27!! Yesterday I attempted to run and ended up coming home for two reasons (1) I don't think I had on enough layers, and (2) I just couldn't breath!
This is my first experience with running in the cold. How do you people do it?! I simply cannot catch my breath when it's super cold outside. Do you slow down and run much slower than you do when the weather is warm? Walk for a long time first? Or simply run for a treadmill which I'm quite tempted to do at this point. I was hoping to make it through November before heading inside for the simple fact that I get so bored on a treadmill and if I go in now, it's going to make for a very long winter!

I trained for the San Diego marathon one year, which is in May, so I trained all winter. I grew to love it! Running in snow and ice is even fun with good tread. Under armour helps a lot. It's light and even a "thin" pair of tights keeps your knees warm. To breathe better, cover your mouth and nose if you can...such as loosely wrapping a scarf around your face, so you breathe warm air. Cold air can take your breath away! Oh---and if you are like me, carry lots of tissues for once that cold air does start moving around in your lungs!

I second Kimberly's suggestions. When I used to run in the cold, non-runners would warn me about pneumonia and stuff like that. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but definitely be aware of it. I love getting hot and sweaty when everyone else is so cold!

I may have mentioned this once or a thousand times, but I am pregnant now, and sick, and jealous of all of the runners I see...especially the ones running in the cold today!
I don't know the hard facts about running in cold weather, and I live in VA too, so really, it's not THAT cold (I am thinking of a cousin who lived in Wyoming), but I always felt healthier doing it, moreso than in summer. I swear it helped repel colds and flu too!

I'm a Florida runner - so when it hits 65 degrees, people are in long sleeves and mittens.
I ran in VA a few weeks ago (it was 55) and my body was certain it was going to snow.
I have great respect for those of you who can conquer the cold.

:-) There must be some people in Fargo just cringing out how lame we are! ...actually, do people run in those places??
