I'll Only Run to There

Am I the only person who runs 'Only to THERE' (that lightpole, that stop sign, that bush, to the top of the hill) while assuring myself that once I get 'THERE', I will stop, when I know good and well that there is another THERE waiting after this one and I'm not fooling anybody...if I space my THEREs then the run will be longer than if I didn't. After all, once you get THERE then THERE really isn't that far.

It's a runner thing, right?

I think it's a brilliant way to run and to get through life. After all, it's the starting that's the hardest!

That's one reason I run Galloway Method for my long runs. 10 miles is far...BUT if I get a 1 minute walk break after every 3 minutes of running then all I have to think about is running for 3 minutes.
(honestly, I clean that way, too! I say, I'm only going to work on the kitchen for 15 minutes and then I'm done...but most often I go longer...and went I don't, it's okay because I said I'd only do 15 minutes!)

So keep going THERE!

Run to the next telephone pole (then he would pick another one, etc) is the way my high school cross country coach taught met to run. I still think like that. Now I have twins, every day when they go to bed, I pat myself on the back for "crossing the finish line"!

TOTALLY a runners thing. I do that too. In the beginning of my running experience I could stop THERE but shoot, now I know I CAN go to the next THERE so of course I have to and the next THERE and the next THERE until the THERE Is 6-10 miles later.

Hey - I was thinking about this post this morning. I was "supposed" to do a 12 mile training run AND I had signed up for the virtual half-marathon (planned on just walking the last 1.1), but I felt so crappy this morning. I got to the running trail and I just didn't want to run AT ALL. So, since i had coffee in me already, i knew i couldn't go back to bed.

i decided to just run the itty bitty loop 2 miles, then I could call it a day and go home. But at 2 miles, i said, okay, just 2 more miles. This repeated for 13.1 miles.

Seriously - your post couldn't have come at a better time.

I often run like this...but it's also how I get the 4 year old places without a shoulder ride. Somehow, racing to the car (stop sign, mailbox, fire hydrant)is much easier than walking.

Okay, I thought I was the only person playing that mental game with myself. If I just make it to . . . then Greenlight by John Legend and Andre 3000 comes on my i-pod and off I go! Funny.
