I've gotta assume that they do -- more of an isometric kind of work(is that the right word?). I switch off arms, and my arms do get tired in the biceps/triceps. I wonder if someone has come up with ways, tweaks, to increase the upper-body strengthening benefits?

I'm going to say no. At least not the kind of work that a 15 lb. set of dumbbells will produce.
